Welcome to our web site! For over
thirty years We Care Program has provided prison chaplaincy services
throughout Alabama and several adjoining states. Since 1970, God has
used over two hundred staff and volunteers to share the love of Christ
with criminal offenders. Although other ministry programs were
offered from time to time, the heart of We Care’s
mission
has always remained with those behind bars.
Much has changed in
prison ministry since We Care Program’s
inception in
1970. The early
years carried with them the excitement of a radical new concept in
ministry for the church. Prison ministry was rare, and men with
pioneer spirits answered the call of God to reach those hurting behind
America’s prison fences. Through the dedication of We Care founder
Martin Weber, a movement was begun in Alabama which propelled others
to launch various prison ministries around the country. Today, hired
chaplains are the norm in most of the larger correctional facilities
throughout the United States, although government budget cutbacks have
eliminated some of these positions. Most of We Care’s chaplaincy
staff assist state chaplains in their
institutions, and in some cases, our staff service smaller facilities
that do not have a government provided chaplain.
Increasingly,
the world-view of the American inmate has changed. His society has
replaced the absolute truths of God’s law with moral relativism. The
gospel of Jesus Christ has become one of many ways to God.
Psychological concepts have replaced Holy Spirit empowered
transformation, making it an even greater challenge for the
Bible-believing Christian to preach and teach God’s truth in the
prison setting. Many would say our efforts are futile, but the Love
of Christ compels us, calling us to an ever-increasing prison
population. Over the years, our organization has witnessed the
supernatural transformation of many of society’s
“outcasts.” This spurs us on to continue answering God’s call
to visit those in prison and make disciples of all nations.
It is
my conviction that the shed blood of Jesus Christ was and is
sufficient to pay the price demanded by a Holy God for the remission
of sin. No matter how grievous a sin you, I, or those in prison may
have committed, God’s gift of salvation is freely offered to all. For
that reason I am thrilled to be able to lead such a fine group of
chaplains—men and women who dedicate themselves to reaching the lost
with this message and who can walk alongside the man or woman who
falls, pick him up, clean him off, and help him to navigate life’s
pathways in the light of God’s word.
Multiple doorways
of opportunity exist for the prison missionary. Often, the ground
lies fallow for lack of workers and support. As you browse the
information on this web site, please consider the role God might have
you play in helping to fulfill the Great Commission in America’s
Prisons.
